The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
